The east coast got tons of snow, we received a dusting and the temperatures are getting warmer for the next few days with some rain. Maybe we can get the Forest Rangers to open the ATV Trails.

Winter Returns To Potter County
Groundhogs and the Weatherman Agree

Punxsutawney Phil, the rodent who resides in Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, predicts six more weeks of winter, but cold-weather enthusiasts should really be watching the weatherman, both reported that winter would return.

Weather forcasts said that the jet stream, the winds that control winter storms were going to push Arctic air toward the Eastern United States. In Potter County, the predicted change could make one of the warmest winters on record a memory.

The snow plows were rusting, and you can't shovel rain. The Snowdeo has been cancelled. I even heard that some of Potter County's maple producers tapping trees to collect sap and start making maple syrup. But put away the sap buckets, load up the wood stove, fire up those snowmobiles, and strap on the skis because winter is back.

It all had to do with the jet stream. The current of air in the upper atmosphere has for most of this winter grabbed warm air from the Pacific Ocean and drug it straight across the US. This blocked the cold air from the Arctic from heading south, like the geese bringing springtime in January.

Weather has left some Potter County businesses out in the cold, warm temperatures mean less revenues. The motels, hotels, restuarants, snowmobile dealers and such are feeling the crunch.

There are some who are holding out hope that snowmobile season is still going to come.

For a lot of people, warm weather in January was a good thing. But others, whose livelihoods are tied to winter's snow do not see it that way.

If there is a silver lining to all the warm January weather, it's a great way to get revenge on the natural gas, heating oil, and propane companies.

Snow and blowing snow advisory in effect until 4 PM est. Snow showers and squalls will continue to affect Potter County through the afternoon. In heavier squalls...a quick 1 to 2 inches may accumulate...but most places will just see a dusting to an inch. The showers should become less organized this afternoon...which will lead to lighter and shorter-duration snows.
This Afternoon: Mostly cloudy and brisk with occasional snow showers. Additional accumulation an inch or two. Highs in the lower 30s. West winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
Tonight: Mostly cloudy with scattered snow showers. Lows around 15. West winds 10 to 20 mph. Chance of snow 50 percent.

Snow showers today FINALLY!...with occasional heavy squalls...will continue through mid afternoon and a 50% chance of snow showers this evening. A fresh coating of 2-4 inches of snow is possible in some areas. The wind will gust over 40 mph at times...causing some blowing and drifting of any snow that manages to accumulate. We'll keep you posted if snow continues. Don't forget that the Potter County Snow Rodeo and West End Trailblazers Winterfest are scheduled for this weekend. Check the Events Calendar for more information and contact numbers.

Cherry Springs State Park Snowmobile Trail Head Relocated For 2005-2006 Season

Snowmobile access points and trail designations at Cherry Springs State Park have changed for the upcoming Winter season. The parking/unloading and restroom facility areas have been relocated to the park's current dump station area, located at the southern most end of the park.

Visitors can access the trail, now distinguished by a split rail cedar fence, heading north along the perimeter of the park property. In order to avoid conflicts with other park visitors, snowmobilers should travel on the trail only and avoid the astronomy observation field. Visitors using the trail should be aware that operating snowmobiles on the observation field is prohibited.

Questions concerning these changes may be directed to the Lyman Run State Park Office at (814) 435-5010, Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM.
