According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (www.SafeCosmetics.org): "the products we use everyday for personal care - from shampoo to deodorant, lotion to make-up - can contain chemical ingredients that are absorbed through the skin, inhaled or ingested. So it's not surprising that potentially harmful chemicals have gotten into our bodies, our breast milk and our children. Some of these chemicals are linked to cancer, birth defects, learning disabilities and other health problems that are epidemic in our society. Astonishingly, in the United States 1 in 2 men and1 in 3 women are expected to develop cancer during their lifetimes, according to the National Cancer Institute."

"The cosmetics industry says its safe to put toxic chemicals linked to cancer, infertility or other health problems into personal care products because the amount in each product is too small to matter. But none of us use just one product. Think about how many products you use in a single day - from toothpaste to soap, shampoo, hair conditioner, deodorant, body lotion, shaving products and makeup - and how many products you use in a year, and over a lifetime. Small amounts of toxic chemicals add up and can accumulate in our bodies. Chemicals linked to cancer and birth defects do not belong in personal care products, period. "

"Ingredients banned from cosmetics: United States - 10 European Union - 1,100 +"

Don't believe it? Take a look at the ingredients list next time you go to purchase some lotion or shampoo.not only is it chemically loaded, many of those products are considered to be toxic.

More and more people are looking for natural alternatives to the chemical products they can buy at the store, and the Mountain Thyme Herbal Fair is a great place to purchase, soaps, lotions, salves, aromatherapy sprays, oils, cleaning products and other personal care items that have been hand- crafted containing healthful herbs and organic, chemical- free compounds. And it's also a great place to get information about herbal use for health as well as an addition to your culinary creations. Frosty Hollow Herb Guild, the local group of gardeners who are interested in herbs, will be one of the vendors at the Fair. Again this year they will be selling their totally organic spice mixes and blends, packaged in two sizes for those of you who would like to try a small amount and also in larger packets for those looking to resupply your kitchen needs. Several vendors will also be selling personal care products, all kinds of fabulous home made soaps that make the entire Fair smell fantastic, and most of these vendors will be there to give free advice on how to use various herbs for healthful living.

During the Fair several programs will be presented including wild plant and flower walks, plant use and identification, and there will be activities specifically geared for children. The Food Matrix Farmer's Market will have fresh produce for sale, there will be live music provided by the wonderful Songwriter's Roundtable, and delicious food will be available to purchase provided by Educators' of Galeton.

Looking for that special plant, bird feeder, bird house or garden decoration? The Herbal Fair will fulfill that need as well. Again this year artists Lisa and Anthony Arkus will be on hand as well and Doug Firestone's wrought iron creations - just the thing to add that special touch to the corner of your flower garden. Several vendors will also be selling beautiful hand-made jewelry with designs created from Nature and don't forget to pick up some locally produced (Sappy's Sugar Shack) maple syrup and maple sugar candy!
