About Potter County PA
Background & General Information
Potter County is located midway between the eastern and western boundaries of Pennsylvania along the New York border. The county was formed by a special Act of Assembly in 1804 when approximately 1,081.3 square miles were acquired from territory in Lycoming County.
Potter County was named for General James Potter who served during the Revolutionary War.
