| | How Potter County Site Submissions Works This document was written to help you understand how to optimize your submissions to pay-per-click (ppc) search engines like Potter County. The concepts in this guide are easy to follow and can be used for any ppc search engine. Step 1: Think about your business What type of business do you have? Let's make believe you own a computer shop called "Rich's Computer Shop". Your target customer is someone who want's to buy a computer... the first thing you need to do is figure out what "keywords" someone is likely to search on when they are interested in your product. Keyword phrases can be anything related to your product, from a particular "computer part" to an actual brand of computers if you sell or service them. Take a look at this list: These are all keywords that someone might type into Potter County search engine if they were looking for a computer or computer parts... (Compaq is a top brand of computers.) These are all perfect keywords that we would want to add our site under. On the Potter County Search Engine, singular and plural searches are considered separate, so if you were adding your site under "computer" you should also add your site under "computers". The same applies to upper case (COMPUTER), lower case (computer) and title case (Computer). You should take a few minutes to write down a list of keyword phrases related to your business. If you need help, when you log into your account at Potter County you can use a special option called "Keyword Search Tool" to see which searches are the most popular. Step 2: Login to your Account If you are not logged into your account please log in now. If you don't have an account yet and want to submit your website click here. Your log in address is: http://www.PotterCountyPa.com/cgi-bin/directory/accounts.cgi Enter your username and password. This will bring you to the Main Members Area Page, listing a summary of your information. Step 3: Adding Your Website Now that you have logged in you need to add your site under the list of keyword phrases, one at a time, that you created earlier. To do this, just click on "Add My Sites". This will bring up a simple form you need to fill in. The first box is called "Keywords". Next you will see a box called "Bid". Note: Let me explain the bid process. Your advertised listing will show in the search results but your account is not debited the amount you bid unless someone actually clicks on your listing and visit your site. This is a very unique concept in advertising compared to news print ads because you only pay when someone actually uses your ad and you set the price. On Potter County Pa search it can be as low as a penny. The next box is for the "Site Title". The title usually includes your websites name and/or a short attention grabbing slogan or description of what you have. Remember, it must be at most 65 characters long (a character is any letter, number, symbol or space.) Don't use all capitals letters. Now you need to enter your "Site URL". The Site URL is the complete web address (domain name) that someone would type in a browser to reach your website... for example, our complete URL is http://www.PotterCountyPa.com. Make sure to enter the FULL url not just www.yoursite, you must include the http:// In the last box you need to enter a longer "Site Description" of your site. The description can be up to 200 characters long and should give the visitor a simple idea of what your site sells. For our example, a description may be: "We have been providing the top name brand computers and parts to our customers for over 10 years. Items can be shipped within 3 days anywhere in the country and make great gifts!". This is where you should sell yourself to the customer and make them want to visit you. This is like a classified ad. An important thing to remember is "don't lie"! Don't say anything that is not true and don't tell them you sell anything you don't sell. While writing a false description may get you more traffic, it will not be "qualified traffic" and the visitor will leave without finding what they are looking for and your account will be debited the amount you bid. When you are done filling in the boxes on this page, press the button labeled "Add Listing" Now the same page will re-load with a message saying - Next - THIS IS IMPORTANT - now is when you enter your next keyword and submit your site again. In Rich's Computer Shop's case he would now enter "computers" into the keyword box. All the other boxes will automatically be filled in. Press the button"Add Listing" once again. You do this as many times as you need to get listed under each individual keyword or keyword phrases. You can submit your website, or websites as many times as you want to, bidding on as many keywords you need that match the content of your website. Step 4: Fund Your Account We already funded your account one dollar to get you started. If you bid .01 cents on keywords that dollar can possibly send 100 targeted visitors to your website. Potter County Pa search engine works on a debit account system. When your funds run out, we automatically stop listing your sites until you fund your account again. This works out well for many advertisers because they can set a spending limit - you will receive an email notification from Potter County Pa when your account is low on funds. To add additional funds to your account, click on "Add Funds" on any page in the members area. The minimum payment is only $10. Step 4: Adjust your Bids Now that your account is active and funded, you should adjust your bids to make sure you are getting the optimum ranking position. The first thing you need to do is decide how much you should be willing to bid. The more you are willing to bid, the higher you will be listed in a keyword search and typically the more traffic you will receive. It is NOT always best to be number one however, you should only bid as much as you are willing to spend to get a customer to your site. How should you decide how much to bid? Let's look at an example: Let's say that Rich (from Rich's Computer Shop) get's 100 visitors to his site, and that for every 100 visitors, 5 of those visitors buy something. Rich also knows that on average when a customer buys something he makes a $10 profit. That means that: 5 paying customers x $10 profit per customer = $50 profit $50 total profit divided by 100 visitors = 50 cents per visitor profit So from some simple math, we see that even though every visitor does not buy something, on average a visitor is worth 50 cents profit for Rich's site. That means that Rich can afford to pay up to 50 cents per click to "break even". If he bids any more than 50 cents per click he will lose money, if he bids less than 50 cents per click, he will make money. Rich may decide that he wants to spend at most 20% of his profits on pay per click bid advertising... this means Rich wants to be listed as high as possible in the listings and bid at most .10 cents per customer visit. Here's how to adjust your bids: From the "Main Members Area" page click on "Manage My Sites", on the "Manage My Sites" page push the button that says "GO" - This will bring up your listings in a spread sheet type format showing: a check box, Keyword(s), Rank, Bid Required To Be #1, Bid, Title, URL and Description. If the bid required to be #1 is less than what you want to spend, check the boxes next to your listings and push "Top Bid Checked Listings" this will make YOU number ONE! If it's more than you want to spend check the boxes next to each listing and push the button "Edit Checked Listings". You can manually adjust your bids so that you gain the position you want. When you are done, make sure to save your changes. Step 6: Affiliate Program Let's take this pay per click search engine advertising to the next level! Log into the main members area and click on "Affiliate Program". Grab some of the search boxes that are already coded with your unique user id and add them to your web pages. Every time someone starts a search from your site and then clicks on a bided advertisers link a percentage of that bid goes into your account. It gets even better. If a website owner signs up from your link you get a percentage of their searches their sign ups and a percentage of any money when they add funds to their account. Your pay per click bids can be free if you refer enough people. We all like free advertising! Step 7: You're all done! That's it, your account should now be live and you will begin receiving traffic. You should occasionally log in to review your statistics, adjust your bids and make sure your account is funded. How much traffic you receive will depend on many things:
Don't forget that the most important part is the price you are willing to pay per visitor (your bid), not how many visitors you receive. We suggest you start slowly and test out different site descriptions, keyword choices and bid amounts to see what works best for you. We want to send you targeted visitors ready to spend!
